Johnson, Henry Denny

JOHNSON, Henry Denny (1843-1933) was active in both Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Born in Newark, Nottinghamshire, England on 3 April 1843 he came to Canada in 1880 and worked in Montreal for two years. In 1882 he was appointed as local superintending architect for the Dept. of Public Works in the North West Territories office at Calgary. It was in this post that he supervised the construction of several federal buildings designed by Thomas Fuller. In 1899 Johnson moved to Edmonton and entered into a partnership with William S. Edmiston (see list of works under Edmiston & Johnson). He commenced his own practice in early 1901 and proved to be a capable designer in his own right with orthodox Edwardian compositions for the mansion for John A. McDougall (1901) and for McKay Avenue School (1904), which served as the home of the Alberta Legislative Assembly until 1908 when the provincial Legislative Buildings were completed.

In 1905 he entered a partnership with Robert P. Barnes, but this was shortlived, and by June of 1906 he had formed a new partnership with Alfred M. Calderon and the brilliant young British architect Roland W. Lines who had arrived in Edmonton in May of that year (Edmonton Daily Bulletin, 23 June 1906, 10). From September 1906 until September 1907 the ambition and talent of Lines, his younger partner, is clearly evident in the stylish and mannered Edwardian designs for institutional works such as Alex Taylor School (1907-08). In November 1906 the firm of Johnson & Lines were one of twenty-three entrants from the United States and Canada who submitted designs in the competition for the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Their scheme was awarded First Prize (Edmonton Daily Bulletin, 27 Feb. 1907, 6, descrip.). With the dissolution of the partnership in late1907 Johnson continued to work under his own name and appears to have retired from active practice after 1914. He died in Edmonton on 6 August 1933 (obituary in the Edmonton Journal, 7 Aug. 1933, 11; 9 Aug. 1933, 11; inf. from Dennis Person, Edmonton).
