COMPETITIONS
TORONTO, ONT., "Design for a Town House Costing $2,500", a design competition staged by the Canadian Architect & Builder magazine, 1888. Chappell received 3rd Prize for his drawings submitted under the pseudonym "Solaria" (C.A.B., i, May 1888, 3). The winner was J.C.B. Horwood of Toronto (inf. Harry T. Holman, Charlottetown)
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I., Roman Catholic Cathedral, Great George Street, 1892-93. Both W.C. Harris and Charles B. Chappell of Charlottetown were invited to submit plans for this landmark in 1892, and a detailed architectural description of the design by Chappell was published in the Daily Examiner [Charlottetown], 17 Jan. 1893, p. 1 and 4. These designs were later set aside, and the project was handed to the Quebec City architect F.X. Berlinguet (inf. Harry Holman, Charlottetown)
SYDNEY, N.S., Court House, 1901. Chappell was an unsuccessful entrant in this competition, but his drawings have survived, and are now held at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Charlottetown (CAG, Item 212.3.8). The competition was won by Elliott & Hopson, and the building completed by Charles & Edward Hopson.
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I., Market House, 1903. Chappell submitted a design for this important public building (PAPEI, Acc. 3607, File 24). His scheme was set aside in favour of the design by Harris & Horton, Architects.
WOLFVILLE, N.S., Baptist Church, Main Street at Highland Avenue, 1910. Chappell was one of five architects invited to submit an entry in this competition (Evening Mail [Halifax], 16 April 1910, 13). His design was set aside and Dumaresq & Cobb of Halifax were declared the winners, but the following year, in 1911, it appears that the commission was given to Charles B. Chappell of Charlottetown, P.E.I. (see list of works above).
