Jenner, Thomas

JENNER, Thomas (1849-1936), an architect active in Kingsville, Ont. for nearly thirty years, is credited with the design of several commercial, ecclesiastical and residential projects situated in towns throughout Essex County in western Ontario. Born in Tonbridge, Co. Kent, England on 23 November 1849 he learned the trade of carpentry there. In 1872 he emigrated to Canada, settling briefly at Strathroy, Ont. before moving to the United States. Within a year he had returned to Canada, taking up residence in Amherstburg, then Essex, and then in Kingsville where he began to style himself as architect and contractor, offering his skill as both designer and as a builder of a variety of projects. Jenner retired from the profession after 1914 and took up farming, then returned to Kingsville in 1917. He later moved to Harrow, Ont. and died there on 1 August 1936 (obit. Leamington Post, 6 Aug. 1936, 5; Kingsville Reporter 6 Aug. 1936, 1; inf. Veronica Brown, Kingsville).
