COMPETITIONS

BANK OF MONTREAL, Place d'Armes, 1845. A group of seven architects from Montreal and Toronto submitted a total of nine different designs for this important landmark. The scheme by Footner was not premiated (Gazette [Montreal], 12 Aug. 1845, 2, list of competitors; M. Denison, Canada's First Bank, ii, 1967, 20-1). One of the two designs prepared by John Wells was declared as winner.
QUEBEC CITY, QUE., Custom House, 1856. Fourteen architects from the United States and Canada prepared designs for this building, but Footner's scheme was passed over in favour of the winning scheme by William Thomas of Toronto (NAC, RG 11, Vol. 90, No. 3, 'Schedule of Competitors for the Proposed Custom House at Quebec City', 25 March 1856)
ST. GEORGE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, Stanley Street, 1867. Footner was one of six Montreal architects who entered this competition and he received a consolation prize of $100 for his effort. The First Premium was awarded to William T. Thomas (inf. from Virginia Nixon, Montreal)
