Jellyman, Joel

JELLYMAN, Joel (1825-1907) of Belleville, Ont. advertised himself as an 'architect & builder' who offered '....plans and specifications for all descriptions of Buildings made to order and works superintended' (Directory of the County of Hastings, 1868-69, 155). In 1873 he designed the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Spring Street East at Colborne Street, TWEED, ONT., 1873, later replaced by a new Methodist Church designed in 1891 by George M. Miller of Toronto (Christian Guardian [Toronto], 4 March 1874, 69). In 1875 he prepared a Gothic design for the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Pleasant Drive at United Street, SELBY, ONT., still standing in 2023 (Christian Guardian [Toronto], 12 Jan. 1876, 14, descrip.).

Jellyman was born in the village of Coaley, Co. Gloucestershire, England on 8 July 1825 and arrived in Canada after 1851. He was recorded as a carpenter living in Belleville, Ont. in 1861, and remained there until 1879 or 1880, but he returned to England at this time where he was once again recorded as a carpenter & joiner. He died at Avening, near Tetbury, Co. Gloucestershire on 28 November 1907 at the age of 82 years.
