Husband, Lester Birley

HUSBAND, Lester Birley (1893-1972), active in Hamilton, Ont., either in partnership with others, or under his own name, in the following firms:

Born in Hamilton, Ont. on 30 October 1893, he graduated from Hamilton Collegiate Institute in 1909, and worked during the summer period of 1912 and 1913 for Mills & Hutton, a leading firm of architects in Hamilton. Husband studied architecture at the Univ. of Toronto in 1912-15, and after WWI he completed his education in Toronto, graduating from the Dept. of Architecture in 1920. He rejoined Mills & Hutton, this time as a draftsman in 1920-21, and in 1921 he invited Hugh D. Robertson to form a partnership. They collaborated together until 1925, then Husband worked under his own name until after WWII when both Husband and Robertson opened a new office in partnership with Arthur Wallace. Their largest and most significant commission was the Government of Canada Building (now Revenue Canada Building), Main Street West at Caroline Street North, HAMILTON, ONT., 1953-55. When Robertson retired in 1954, the firm continued with various partners until it was dissolved in 1969.
