Hogle, Morley

HOGLE, Morley (1870-1920), a brilliant and talented young architect in Montreal, Que. He was a native of Philippsburg, Quebec and received his education and training in Montreal, and his career as an architect began in the office of Taylor & Gordon after 1897, and Hogle joined the Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects on 13 February 1898. While working there, he met another young architect Huntley W. Davis, with whom he would later form a partnership. In 1904, Taylor invited both to become partners in the new office of Taylor, Hogle & Davis. When his mentor Andrew T. Taylor left Canada in April 1904 to return to England, Hogle and Davis inherited the practise, and devoted much of their career to the design of branches of the Merchants Bank of Canada, located in every province from Alberta through to Quebec. Their designs were sophisticated landmarks in the Beaux-Arts style, often clad in white terra-cotta, with exquisite detailing derived from the classical tradition, and inspired by their experience gained under the tutelage of Taylor. One of their favoured devices was to incorporate a dramatic and very large circular window nearly 8 feet in diameter over the main entrance to the bank buildings, best seen in their plans for the Merchants Bank, Dupont Street at Christie Street, Toronto (1915; still standing 2022), and in the Merchants Bank in Pembroke, Ontario (1919).

The career of Hogle ended unexpectedly on 30 January 1920 when he died from the effects of pneumonia at the age of 50 years (obituary Gazette [Montreal], 31 Jan. 1920, 4; obit. C.R., xxxiv, 11 Feb. 1920, 144). His business partner Huntley W. Davis continued to practise for another twenty years. Two of the young architects who trained in their office were David Marshall (later active in Manitoba), and Norman W. Mann (later active in Niagara Falls, Ont.). Illustrated articles on the bank architecture of Hogle & Davis appeared in the journal Construction [Toronto], xi, April 1918, 109-112, and xii, December 1919, 387-391.
