ROSS, George Allan (1879-1946), partner in the largest and most important architectural firm in Montreal, Que. during the first half of the 20th C. He was a partner in the following offices:

The Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal holds an extensive collection of architectural drawings prepared by the firms of Ross & MacFarlane, and by Ross & MacDonald. Many of the projects listed below are supplemented by drawings in this collection. In addition, the University of Montreal published an illustrated French language monograph on the work of Ross & MacDonald in 2001 entitled 'La Fantasme Metropolitain: l'Architecture de Ross et MacDonald' and written by Prof. Jacques Lachapelle.

COMPETITIONS

MONTREAL, QUE., The Lookout, on top of Mount Royal, 1905. Ross & MacFarlane were one of three firms who submitted a design for this structure (Montreal Daily Star, 13 Sept. 1905, 11). The initial winner was Aristide Beaugrand-Champagne, but the project was later given to Marchand & Haskell in 1906, who worked in collaboration with Edward & W.S. Maxwell.
MONTREAL, QUE., McGill University, Medical Faculty Building, Pine Avenue, 1907. There were eight local architectural firms from Montreal who were invited to submit a design for this major educational building (Gazette [Montreal], 22 July 1907, 3). The plans by Ross & MacFarlane were passed over and Brown & Vallance were declared the winners.
MONTREAL, QUE., Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, Sherbrooke Street West at Redpath Street, 1929. The office of Ross & MacDonald were one of twelve Montreal architectural firms invited to submit an entry (R.A.I.C. Journal, vi, Dec. 1929, 442-3, illus.; inf. Scott Edwards). Their proposal was set aside in favour of the modern Gothic design by Harold L. Fetherstonhaugh, who was declared the winner.
NEW YORK CITY, N.Y., The Canadian Pavilion, World's Fair, 1939. Ross & MacDonald were one of several prominent Canadian architectural firms who submitted a design for this pavilion. They were awarded the Third Prize of $200. for their effort (Ottawa Journal, 30 March 1938, 2; R.A.I.C. Journal, xv, April 1938, 78-80, illus.). The winner was W.F. Williams from British Columbia.
