COMPETITIONS

KINGSTON, ONT., Victoria Public School, Union Street at Frontenac Street, 1892. Power & Son were one of 4 local architects who submitted plans and a fee proposal for this commission, but they only obtained 2 votes from the Board of Education committee. William Newlands received 9 votes, and he was awarded the contract (Kingston Daily News, 8 April 1892, 4)
KINGSTON, ONT., Queen's University, several buildings on the campus, 1900-1901. Initially, nearly 15 architects submitted plans, but 10 of these were rejected by the Selection Committee, and 5 sets of drawings were advanced to a second stage. The competition for four new buildings was initially awarded to Power & Son of Kingston (Daily British Whig [Kingston], 26 Dec. 1900, 6; and 29 Dec. 1900, 8). However, the Committee later overturned this decision and awarded the commission for the buildings to Symons & Rae of Toronto, and these were built over the following three year-long period from 1901 to 1904.
