PENNINGTON, James Carlisle (1885-1963), the acknowledged dean of the architectural scene in Windsor and Essex County, and who was active for over fifty years in the following offices:

The City of Windsor Archives holds an extensive collection of original architectural drawings prepared by J.C. Pennington between 1908 and 1963. These drawings document over 600 projects designed by Pennington, and by Pennington & Boyde, and virtually every project listed below is accompanied by drawings in this collection which was donated to the City of Windsor by William Fraser, Architect, in 1987 (see full article on this collection is The Windsor Star, 7 Feb. 1987, A5, illus. & descrip.).

COMPETITIONS

SANDWICH, ONT., Essex County Municipal Building, 1914. Pennington was one of three local architects from Windsor who submitted plans for this building (Detroit Free Press, 29 Jan. 1914, 12).
KITCHENER, ONT., This architect was one of 4 designers who were asked to submit plans for the new Collegiate Institute & Technical School at Kitchener in 1919 (News Record [Kitchener], 23 Dec. 1919, 6). The winner was Stephen B. Coon & Son of Toronto, and his design was later built in 1922-23.
WINDSOR, ONT., John A. Campbell Public School, Hall Avenue at Tecumseh Road, 1925. Pennington & Boyde were one of seven local architects who submitted designs for this large 24 room school (Border Cities Star [Windsor], 2 Sept. 1925, Section Two, p. 8, detailed analysis of competition). They received Third Prize of $250 for their effort, and a Fifth Prize of $100 for another alternative design which they submitted. The winners were Nichols, Sheppard & Masson
WINDSOR, ONT., new Collegiate Institute, Tecumseh Road East, between Mercer Street and Highland Avenue, 1925. Shortly after the competition for the John Campbell School noted above, the Board of Education staged another competition for public Collegiate School (Border Cities Star [Windsor], 21 Nov. 1925, 5). Pennington & Boyde were awarded Third Prize of $250. The winners were Cameron & Ralston, but the site was later occupied by H. Guppy Public School, designed by a different architect.
