Taylor, Lewis Horning

TAYLOR, Lewis Horning (1861-1925), was the partner in a succession of architectural offices in Brantford, Ont., which included:

Lewis H. Taylor, Brantford, 1901
Stewart, Stewart & Taylor, with offices in Hamilton & Brantford, 1902-04 (with William Stewart and Walter Stewart)
Stewart, Witton & Taylor, with offices in Hamilton & Brantford, 1904-06 (with Walter Stewart, and W.P. Witton)
Taylor & Taylor, Brantford, 1907-13 (with J. Albert Taylor)
Taylor & Bodley, Brantford, April 1913-16 (with Frederick C. Bodley)

Born on 18 June 1861 at Bealton, Ontario, near Brantford, he first worked as a carpenter but may have articled in an architectural office in Hamilton. He commenced his career under his own name in 1901, then served as the local representative of the Hamilton firm of Stewart & Stewart, assisting them with the supervision and construction of their designs for buildings in Brantford from August 1902 onward (see list of works under William Stewart). When William Stewart retired in 1904, his son Walter created the new firm of Stewart & Witton in Hamilton in April 1904 (Spectator [Hamilton], 23 April 1904, 1). They asked Taylor to become a full partner in the firm, and to represent them and oversee their commissions in Brantford (see list of works under Walter W. Stewart). In early 1907 Taylor opened an new office in Brantford in partnership with his nephew J. Albert Taylor, and they were successful in obtaining clients for more than thirty commercial, residential, institutional and ecclesiastical projects in Brantford and in surrounding towns of Hespeler, Ingersoll, Woodstock and London, Ontario. After the dissolution of their partnership in April 1913, Taylor joined with Frederick C. Bodley to form a new partnership, but this was terminated in late 1916 or early 1917. Taylor died in Mount Pleasant, Ont. on 4 January 1925 (obituary Brantford Expositor, 5 January 1925, 6; inf. Paul Dilse, Toronto). A detailed list of works by Taylor & Bodley was published in the Brantford Daily Expositor, 6 Dec. 1913, Supplement Section called "The Forward Number", page 30.
