Stinson, John Crawford

STINSON, John Crawford (1862-1925), active in Fort William, Ont. (now Thunder Bay) where he began to advertise himself as an architect in 1902. Born in the town of Ripley, Bruce County, Ontario on 2 September 1862, he arrived in Canada before 1881 and was recorded as an “architectural draftsman” in Fort William in the 1901 Census of Canada. Within just five years, he had established himself as a leading professional there; in 1907 he was noted as the architect “….who has probably designed the majority of buildings erected in the City during the last few years” (Fort William Times Journal, 30 March 1907). He formed a partnership in 1907 with Frederick Eley, a newly arrived English-trained architect, and with William Hood, originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, but within six months Eley had departed for Vancouver, and Stinson & Hood continued to collaborate until late August 1909. Stinson is last recorded in 1913 as the Resident Architect supervising the construction of the Examining Warehouse in Fort William (1913-15, designed by David Ewart of the federal Dept. of Public Works in Ottawa. Stinson later died in his home town of Ripley, Ontario on 19 December 1925 (Prov. of Ontario, Register of Deaths, Bruce County, 1925, p. 408, No. 008590). He was later buried at Ripley Huron Cemetery.
