COMPETITIONS

CHICAGO, ILL., The Washington State Pavilion, 1893. While living in Port Townsend, Whiteway was one of 21 architects who submitted a design in the competition for a State Pavilion for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 18 Nov. 1891, 8, descrip.). His scheme was "..a plain structure, with pyramidal towers". The winner was Warren P. Skillings of Seattle.
VANCOUVER. B.C., The East End School, and the West End School, 1900. Whiteway was one of ten local architects who submitted designs for two new public schools in Vancouver (Province [Vancouver], 21 July 1900, 6). His plans were passed over in favour of winning schemes from E.A. Whitehead and by Parr & Fee.
VANCOUVER, B.C., Hotel Vancouver, 1900. Whiteway was one of six architects from British Columbia who were invited by the C.P.R. head office in Montreal to submit designs for a new hotel (Province [Vancouver], 15 Oct. 1900, 7). It is unclear who won this competition.
VANCOUVER, B.C., Simon Fraser Public School, Manitoba Street at West 16th Avenue, 1908. Whiteway received Second Prize of $100 for his design of this school (Vancouver Daily World, 9 April 1908, 10; 12 May 1908, 10). The winner was Pearce & Hope of Vancouver.
