Bussieres, Joseph Georges

BUSSIERES, Joseph Georges (1869-1916) was the son of Joseph Bussieres, a building contractor who frequently acted as a contractor and erected buildings for David Ouellet, the prominent architect in Quebec City. J.G. Bussieres was born on 27 May 1869 at Pont-Rouge, Que. and likely received his training under Ouellet before forming a partnership with him in 1889-90 (see list of works under Ouellet & Bussieres). He opened his own office in 1892 and specialized in ecclesiastical work executed in a highly eclectic style inspired by Gothic and Romanesque precedent. More than a dozen of his major commissions can be found in the Portneuf County region of Quebec. He was one of the founding members of the Province of Quebec Association of Architects in 1890. Bussieres died unexpectedly on 5 April 1916 at the age of 46 years, and was buried at Belmont Cemetery in Quebec City (death notice in l'Evenement [Quebec City], 6 April 1916, 8; Paul Trepanier, 'J. Georges Bussieres et les Eglises Portneuvoises', in Continuite, No. 50, Summer 1991, 38-42, illus.; inf. Rev. Edouard Bussieres, Montreal)
