Bunney, William

BUNNEY, William (1851-1925) worked as a builder and architect in Bowmanville and Newmarket, Ont. from 1885 until 1898. Born in England, he came to Canada in 1871 and was active as a contractor in Durham County before settling in Bowmanville and advertising himself as an architect. His best known work there was a competent design for the Congregational Church, 1890 (burned 1958) which was said to be '...one of the most attractive churches in the town architecturally'. He joined the Ontario Association of Architects on 5 November 1890 (Register of the O.A.A., 1891, 5) and the following year moved to Newmarket, Ont. but abandoned his practice there in 1898 and went to Ottawa to join the W.C. Edwards Manufacturing Co. (C.A.B., xi, June 1898, 110). In 1904 he was recorded as working in Dundas, Ont. (C.A.B., xvii, July 1904, xii). Bunney died in Hamilton, Ont. on 14 August 1925 (obituary in the Spectator [Hamilton] 15 Aug. 1925, 5).
