Bulman, John A. Proudfoot

BULMAN, John Alexander Proudfoot (1852-1947), a native of Newbridge, Scotland, was active in Montreal where he began his career in partnership with W. McLea Walbank. Bulman emigrated to Canada in 1877 and joined Walbank in 1878. They worked together until early 1881 when their firm was dissolved. Bulman continued to work under his own name until after the turn of the century and specialised in the design of row housing projects, many of which were clad in the characteristic Montreal red sandstone. His clients included property developers and speculative builders who erected projects that lined streets such as St. Matthews Street, Guy Street, Ste. Catherine Street West, Milton Street, Burnside Place and Cathedral Street (inf. from tender calls in the Contract Record [Toronto], 1890 through 1896). No references to his work can be found after 1908, but in 1910 it was announced that he had moved to North Bay, Ont. to join the staff of Henry W. Angus (Cobalt Daily Nugget, 3 June 1910, 2). Angus was a successful architect in that city, and Bulman remained there for several years. Bulman retired from practise in 1917 and later died in Montreal on 2 September 1947 (obit. Gazette [Montreal], 4 Sept. 1947, 21).
