He was a native of Clarence Centre, N.Y., was born on 18 October 1883 and trained as an engineering draftsman for the Montour Bridge Co. and the Seneca Engineering Co. He moved to Albany and worked as bridge designer and structural engineer for the State Engineer's Office, then moved to St. Paul, Minn. In 1908 where he was hired as a bridge engineer by the Northern Pacific Railway Co. In 1909 he moved to Saskatoon and joined W.W. La Chance as a draftsman and engineer. His knowledge of reinforced concrete construction was particularly helpful in planning a number of commercial blocks in the city after he opened an office under his own name in July 1911. The following year he formed a partnership with Fred L. Turnbull; shortly after they won the competition for the Presbyterian Church at NORTH BATTLEFORD, SASK. The firm was dissolved prior to the outbreak of WWI. Bugenhagen left Saskatoon in May 1914 and opened an office at Minot, North Dakota in April 1916 in partnership with Robert Stacy-Judd (Ward County Independent [Minot], 20 April 1916, 1, article on the new partnership). Surprisingly, their collaboration lasted only four months, and was dissolved in August 1916 (Ward County Independent [Minot], 17 Aug. 1916, 9). Bugenhagen then opened his own office, and remained active in Minot until after 1950. He died there on 23 July 1953 (obit. Michigan Society of Architects Monthly Bulletin, xxvii, Sept. 1953, 25; biog. and port. Saskatoon History, No. 3, 1985, 32-4). A photographic portrait of Bugenhagen was published in The Saturday Press (Saskatoon), Building & Development Number, 1912, p. 27.
