Bruce, George Rawer

BRUCE, George Rawer (1857-1903) of Guelph, Ont. was the son of Alexander Bruce, a builder who operated a successful contracting business with his brother George Bruce in Guelph in the mid-nineteenth century. George R. Bruce learned the trade of carpentry from his father and uncle and entered into a partnership with their company. After the death of his father Alexander in 1894 he continued the business and by 1895 he was advertising himself as 'Architect & Valuator' in Guelph (Directory for the Counties of Grey, Waterloo and Wellington, 1895). His commissions consisted primarily of residential works. His sudden death on 16 Feburary 1903 at the age of forty-five years was caused by pneumonia (obituary in the Evening Mercury [Guelph], 17 Feb. 1903, 1; inf. from Charlotte Mackie, Guelph)
