Brown, Johnston

BROWN, Johnston (fl. 1878-83) was recorded as the architect for a new mansion for Robert Mooney at UXBRIDGE, ONT. in 1878 (Uxbridge Journal, 15 Aug. 1878, 2). He may be the same 'Johnston Brown, Architect' active in Winnipeg in 1883 where he was noted as the designer of Ryan's Block, Main Street, WINNIPEG, MAN. (Winnipeg Daily Sun, 21 March 1883, 1, descrip.; 25 Aug. 1883, descrip.). This significant four storey block was the first commercial building in Winnipeg constructed entirely in stone, and contained the city's first electric passenger elevator.
