Brodie, Frederick Neil

BRODIE, Frederick Neil (1871-1926) was a leading architect in New Brunswick during the first decades of the 20th C. Born in Fredericton on 1 September 1871 he attended Saint John Grammar School and moved to Boston to continue his education and training. Upon his return to Saint John he worked for several prominent architects including G. Ernest Fairweather, for R.C. John Dunn, and for Harry H. Mott. In January 1901 he opened his own office in Saint John and within a decade had built up a wide-ranging practice with his designs for commercial, institutional, residential and industrial works. His monumental Beaux-Arts designs for school buildings were erected in several cities and towns, and he was noted for '..his reputation as a reliable, thoroughly versed and competent architect whose influence extended beyond the bounds of the province'. His impressive schemes for large residences along Douglas Avenue, which served as the location for the homes of some of Saint John's wealthiest citizens, were invariably executed in a Queen Anne style. By the 1920's he had adopted a more varied and eclectic mixture of styles for his institutional commissions. Declining health forced Brodie to retire in November 1925 and to turn over much of his practice to H.S. Brenan, one of the employees in his office. Brodie died at Brown's Flats, N.B. on 26 August 1926 (obit. Telegraph-Journal [Saint John], 27 Aug. 1926, 10; biog. and list of works G.K. Hughes, Music of the Eye: Architectural Drawings of Canada's First City, 1991, 122-5, illus.). The New Brunswick Museum in Saint John holds a small collection of drawings prepared by Brodie.
