Brodeur, Charles

BRODEUR, Charles (1871-1936) was born in St. Hyacinthe, Que. of 7 February 1871 and educated at Mont. St. Louis College in Montreal. He articled with the leading Montreal firm of Perrault, Mesnard & Venne (in 1891-94) and was in partnership with Charles Bernier from 1894 to 1900 (see list of works under Bernier & Brodeur). In 1900 he moved to Hull, Que. and in the following year his career received a significant boost when he won the competition for the new Hull City Hall (Ottawa Journal, 16 May 1901, 9). He practised alone until 1921 when he invited J.E. Pilon to form a new partnership. Their practice flourished, and in 1923 they opened a branch office across the river in Ottawa, Ont. From 1930 Brodeur continued to work under his own name in Hull until his death there on 11 December 1936 (obituary Ottawa Journal, 11 Dec. 1936, 18; obit. Le Droit [Ottawa], 11 Dec. 1946, 5; 14 Dec. 1936, 4; obituary Gazette [Montreal], 12 Dec. 1936, 9; R.A.I.C. Journal, xiv, Jan. 1937, 18; inf. Ontario Association of Architects). A photographic portrait of the architect can be found in Who's Who in Hull, 1928, 23.
