Brassard, Sylvio

BRASSARD, Sylvio (1898-1974) was born in Jonquiere, Que. and graduated from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal in May 1925. He practised in Chicoutimi in 1927-31 then opened an office in Quebec City in 1932. Inspired by the writing and teaching of Gerard Morisset, he had a strong interest in early Quebec architecture and sought inspiration from this vernacular tradition. He designed a number of churches in the lower St. Lawrence River valley which faithfully interpreted the 18th and 19th Century precedents of church architecture in Quebec. Brassard died in Quebec City on 10 September 1974 (death notice Le Soleil [Quebec City], 10 Sept. 1974, 47). The Archives Nationales du Quebec at Laval University holds a small collection of drawings by Brassard.
