Bowe, James Henry

BOWE, James Henry (1856-1926) was a nephew of Alex G. Fowler, and was active in Montreal in partnership with Fowler from 1880 until October 1893 (see list of works under Fowler & Bowe). Born in 1856 or 1857 he arrived in Montreal in 1877, and in December of that year he gave a public lecture on the subject of Egyptian architecture and art, and it was noted that "...he has studied architecture in the best schools of the old world, and he will be an acquisition to our city. He is associated with Mr. A.G. Fowler, architect" (Gazette [Montreal], 4 Dec. 1877, p. 4). This indicates that Bowe likely trained with, or served an apprenticeship in, the office of his uncle A.G. Fowler, and that he may have been invited to move to Montreal from England. He commenced practise in 1880 and remained a member of the Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects until 1893. No information on his architectural activities can be found after this date. He died in Montreal on 5 August 1926 (death notice Gazette [Montreal], 6 Aug. 1926, 7)
