Bourne, Walter Hargreaves

BOURNE, Walter Hargreaves (1874- c. 1919) was born in Darlington, Co. Durham, England on 29 April 1874 and later practised there from 1900 to 1912 where he claimed to have been '...the architect for hotels, private houses, banks, office and mercantile blocks and schools' (Medicine Hat Daily News, 15 Feb. 1913, Industrial Supplement, Section Three, biog. for W.H. Bourne, and Section Eight, biog. for Bourne & Morrison). He arrived in Medicine Hat, Alberta in October 1912 and formed a partnership there with Alexander I. Morrison in 1913, but only two projects by their firm have been located. When Morrison enlisted during WWI and went overseas, Bourne remained in Medicine Hat and specialised in the design of school buildings. He won the competition for a new school in Piapot, Sask. in 1916, and prepared plans for a substantial Technical School in Medicine Hat in 1916, but only the basement was constructed, and the project was later abandoned and the excavation was then covered over (Medicine Hat News, 25 Jan. 1916, 1; C.R., xxx, 9 Feb. 1916, 44). He moved to Saskatoon in the sping of 1919 and opened his own office in the Canada Block in that city. No information on his activity after 1919 has been found (inf. R.I.B.A. [London], Directory of British Architects 1834-1914, 2001, i, 226; inf. Samuel Boisvert, Calgary, Alta.). A biography and photographic portrait of W.H. Bourne was published in the Saskatoon Daily Star, 23 July 1919, 6.
