Boehner, George William

BOEHNER, George William (1827-1906) trained as a builder and carpenter under Edward Van Horne in Liverpool, N.S. and is almost certainly the same 'Mr. Bochner [sic], architect and builder' who contracted to design and build the Wesleyan Methodist Church at LIVERPOOL, N.S. in 1863 (British Colonist [Halifax], 27 June 1863, 2). In 1873-74 he was consulted on rebuilding St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg, N.S. and he recommended David Stirling for the commission. In 1880 Boehner opened a woodworking mill at West Ferry LeHave River, N.S. to provide finished materials for his building operations, and in 1892 prepared the plans for the Lunenburg County Court House at BRIDGEWATER, N.S. (M. Carter, Early Canadian Court Houses, 1983, 203, illus.). By 1895 his sons had joined him in the business as partners, and in 1899 they designed a major addition to the Home for the Poor at the Lunenburg Asylum in DAYSPRING, N.S. (dwgs. at PANS). Boehner retired after 1900 (biog. M. Rosinski, Architects of Nova Scotia, 1994, 151).
