Bodley, Frederick Charles

BODLEY, Frederick Charles (1880-1968) of Brantford, Ont. was born in London, England on 7 October 1880, son of Frederick Robert Bodley, and was educated at the South Kensington School of Art in 1900-02. Frederick then practised on his own account in London in 1905-06 and was said to have occupied "....a position in the private architectural office of the Duchy of Cornwall" while working in London. Bodley emigrated to Canada where he found work with J. L. Thomas in London, Ont. (in 1907), and with Taylor & Taylor of Brantford (in 1908-10). He worked briefly for Thomas Hooper in Vancouver in 1911 but returned to Brantford later that year and formed a partnership with Lewis H. Taylor in April 1913 (Brantford Daily Expositor, 11 April 1913, 3). During this early period, Bodley also taught architectural drawing and building construction in evening classes at Brantford Collegiate (Brantford Expositor, 24 Sept. 1912, 3).

He then opened his own office in Brantford in 1916 and continued to practise under his own name until well after 1950, except for a brief period in 1921-22 when he was in partnership with Arthur H. Livingston, as Bodley & Livingston, Architects. Bodley held a particular interest in the design of educational buildings, and many of his commissions came to him from local district school boards in Brantford and Paris, Ontario and from school boards in the surrounding townships. In Brantford his name can be linked with more than a dozen schools designed between 1920 and 1960. In a tribute to his architectural contribution, the Brantford Board commissioned him to design a school on Rawdon Street in 1956, and then named the school after him. His last work for the Board was North Park Collegiate Vocational School in 1960. Bodley died in Brantford on 4 February 1968 (obituary Brantford Expositor, 5 Feb. 1968; biog. Brantford Expositor, 6 April 1922, 21; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects). The obituary article on Bodley published in 1968 erroneously states that Frederick C. Bodley was the son of the well-known British architect George Frederick Bodley (1827-1907) of London, England, but recent research has proven this to be untrue.
