Ogilvy, David

OGILVY, David (1866-1934), son of James Angus Ogilvy, a wealthy and successful department store merchant in Montreal, attended McGill University and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1884. He worked in the office of Hutchison & Steele in Montreal, then moved to Omaha, Nebraska where he practised in partnership with John McDonald in the firm of Ogilvy & McDonald from 1886 until 1890. He relocated in Portland, Oregon and worked there until 1894 before returning to Montreal to open an architectural office, at first with his brother Robert F. Ogilvy, and then under his own name. His first important architectural project was completed for his father who commissioned him to prepare a design for the new Ogilvy's Department Store on Ste. Catherine Street West (1894-96). This family connection later led his father to once again ask his son to oversee the construction of a much larger headquarters for the store in 1909 located directly across the street from the original building. Ogilvy was briefly in partnership with Charles A. Mitchell in 1910 (see list of works under Mitchell & Ogilvy). He continued to practise in Montreal until 1914 but no information on his work has been found after this date; he may have suffered from a lingering mental illness which necessitated treatment at the Homewood Sanatorium in Guelph, Ont., a private clinic for patients with psychiatric disorders. He died there on 24 January 1934 (death notice Gazette [Montreal], 31 January 1934, 7; biog. Harvey K. Hines, Illustrated History of the State of Oregon, 1893, 608-09; inf. from American Inst. of Architects, Wash., Box 16, S 15, Application for Membership dated 4 Nov. 1898; biog. in Richard E.
