Blanchard, Edward Stirling

BLANCHARD, Edward Stirling (1886-1953), active in Charlottetown, P.E.I., where he was born on 14 February 1886, and he was the nephew of David Stirling, one of the leading architects of the Maritimes in the 19th Century. Blanchard attended courses in architecture at McGill University and graduated in 1910, then spent two years with Ross & MacFarlane before forming a partnership in Montreal with G.E. Conrad (fl. 1913-14). The office of Blanchard & Conrad was one of sixty-two firms who submitted entries in the competition for the Departmental Buildings in Ottawa in 1914, but their proposal was not premiated. In 1915 Blanchard joined the Canadian Army and went overseas where he was wounded in action. After a long convalescence in Ireland he returned to Charlottetown and opened an office under his own name in 1920. He remained in practice there until 1944 when he formed a partnership with James E. Harris. Much of Blanchard's early work adopted a conservative eclectic styling, but by the late 1930's he had begun to employ modernist ideas in his work, evident in his design for the YMCA in Charlottetown (1944). Blanchard died in Charlottetown on 17 December 1953 (obit. Charlottetown Patriot, 17 Dec. 1953, 5; Guardian [Charlottetown], 18 Dec. 1953, 5; port. 19 Dec. 1953, 7)
