Blaiklock, George Frederick

BLAIKLOCK, George Frederick (1817-1883), son of Henry Musgrave Blaiklock, was active in Quebec City where he was recorded as an architect in 1844 (A. Hawkins, Quebec Directory, 1844-45). Few if any references can be found to link his name to the design of buildings there. Described variously as a masonry contractor, stone cutter and builder, in 1845-46 he contracted to build (and may have designed) Stadacona Terrace, Grand Allee, QUEBEC CITY, QUE., the oldest surviving housing terrace in Canada. In 1851 he moved to Halifax to undertake work on the Wellington Barracks. He later formed a partnership with Simon Peters and Henry Peters, and their firm, Peters & Blaiklock, successfully tendered to build several projects there but which were designed by others. The Halifax City Directories include the name of G.F. Blaiklock as 'architect' from 1869 to 1873, but his self-advertisement in 1871 describes him only as 'government contractor and builder' (McAlpines City of Halifax Directory, 1871-72, 218). Blaiklock died at Fredericton, N.B. on 8 June 1883 (obit. Halifax Herald, 9 June 1883, 3; biog. A.J.H. Richardson, Quebec City: Architects, Artisans & Builders, 1984, 107-08; M. Rosinski, Architects of Nova Scotia, 1994, 87).
