Blaikie, Edwin K.

BLAIKIE, Edwin K. (1861-1928) was an architect of Boston, Massachusetts who, together with his brother William E. Blaikie, designed a palatial residence for Nelson A. Rhodes, AMHERST, N.S., c. 1890. Rhodes was a well-known Nova Scotia contractor and member of the firm of Rhodes & Curry, and many of the undated drawings for this commission can be found in the Mott Collection, PANB, 356. In 1890 the Blaikie Brothers prepared plans for 'The Cedars', a substantial residence for Thomas G. McMullin, Queen Street, TRURO, N.S. (E. Pacey & A. Comiter, Landmarks: Historic Buildings of Nova Scotia, 1994, 180-1, illus.). Both commissions illustrate the high standard of craftsmanship and detailing that could be found in a fashionable residence in the Queen Anne style, the frequent choice of wealthy clients in Nova Scotia at the turn of the century. Several of Edwin Blaikie's drawings for projects in Boston are held at the Boston Public Library; he died at Wakefield, Mass. on 22 October 1928 (obituary in the Evening Transcript [Boston], 23 Oct. 1928, 6).
