Bishop, Roy Hartnoll

BISHOP, Roy Hartnoll (1888-1948), son of Charles H. Bishop, was born in Toronto on 4 August 1888 and graduated from the Dept. of Architecture at the University of Toronto in 1912. He articled with Darling & Pearson (in 1908-10), with Chapman & McGiffin (in 1910-12), with Sproatt & Rolph (in 1912-14), and then left Canada and went overseas in 1914 with the Royal Canadian Engineers during WWI. In 1919 his mentor Alfred H. Chapman invited him to become a partner in the new firm of Chapman, Oxley & Bishop (active 1919-22). Bishop opened his own office in Toronto, with a branch in Oshawa, in 1924 and remained active until 1940. His most significant commission from the period was the Art Deco design for the large warehouse of the Tip Top Tailors Clothing Co. in Toronto. Bishop joined the RCAF in 1940 and served in the North Atlantic, then resumed practice in 1944 and became company architect for Dominion Stores Ltd., supervising their post-war plans for stores across Canada. He died in Toronto on 28 December 1948 (obit. Toronto Telegram, 28 Dec. 1948, 14; R.A.I.C. Journal, xxvi, May 1949, 172; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects)
