Birley, Studley Patrick

BIRLEY, Studley Patrick (1904-1962), a native of Birmingham, Engl., was born on 17 March 1904 and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, but did not receive a formal education in architecture. He emigrated to Canada in November 1931 and settled in Victoria where he articled with Spurgin & Johnson, and later with J. Graham Johnson. He practiced under his own name from 1936 and is credited with the design of a significant Art Deco landmark, the Sussex Apartment Hotel, completed in 1938. He was briefly in partnership with David C. Frame in 1941-42, but left Victoria to serve with the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII. Upon his return, he invited John H. Wade and C.D. Stockdill to form a partnership in Victoria in 1946. Their firm executed a number of important post-war buildings in Victoria designed in a progressive modernist style. In June 1952 their firm was dissolved and Birley continued to practise in a new partnership with Ian Simpson from 1955. Birley died in Victoria on 29 July 1962 (obit.
