Bell, William

BELL, William (1776-1846), 'architect and native of the north of England' was active in Montreal after 1822 until his death there on 15 October 1846. In 1826 he was one of six competitors to submit an entry in the competition for the new Gaol at Montreal (Montreal Herald, 25 Feb. 1826, 2). The drawings were submitted to the Lower Canada Assembly but a decision was deferred for nearly four years until 1830 when the scheme by John Wells was chosen. The name of 'William Bell, mason and plasterer' appears on several notary contracts held at the Archives Nationales du Quebec during the period of 1821-22 (death notice Gazette [Montreal], 16 Oct. 1846, 2).
