Belanger, Yves

BELANGER, Yves (1909-1978), active in Montreal, Que., was born there on 12 October 1909. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts at Montreal where his talent as a designer was acknowledged in 1932 when he received Third Prize in the R.A.I.C. Student Competition for 'A Building for a Provincial Government' (R.A.I.C. Journal, ix, March 1932, 61, illus.). After graduating in 1933 he articled with J. Alcide Chausse and later worked as a draftsman with Raoul Gariepy, Lucien Parent and with Gascon & Parant. He formed a partnership with Jean Crevier in 1946 (see list of works under Crevier & Belanger), and in 1949 they were joined by new partners Louis P. Lemieux and Henri Mercier. In 1954 Belanger opened his own office in Montreal and remained active until 1978. He died in Montreal on 29 September 1978 (death notice La Presse [Montreal], 30 Sept. 1978, H27; biog. and port. An illustrated biography and list of works by the firm of Crevier & Belanger was published in 1994 in the French language architectural periodical entitled ARQ [Montreal], No. 78, April 1994, 20-1.
