Beaudry, Joseph Alphonse Ubald

BEAUDRY, Joseph Alphonse Ubald (1842-1928) was a successful civil engineer and land surveyor active in Montreal. His professional title as "architect" consistently appears for more than forty years in Montreal Directories published from 1867 until 1914, yet few references can be found to his architectural activity. Born in St. Hyacinthe, Que. he was educated at St. Mary's Jesuit College in Montreal and later became Assistant Engineer for the City of Montreal where he helped design the waterworks systems for the wards of Hochelega, St. Henri and Ste. Cunegonde, the latter being the first direct pressure waterworks system in Canada (death notice La Presse [Montreal], 27 Feb. 1928, 21; Le Devoir [Montreal], 28 Feb. 1928, 2; biog. in H. Morgan, Canadian Men & Women of the Time, 1912, 77).
