Beattie, William Caven

BEATTIE, William Caven (1886-1945) was born near Guelph, Ont. on 12 May 1886, son of Rev. and Mrs. D.M. Beattie. He was educated at the Toronto Technical School and trained in the offices of John M. Lyle (in 1906-08), with Darling & Pearson (in 1908-12), with F.S. Baker (in 1913), and with Chapman & McGiffin (1914). He moved to Ottawa in 1918 and served as Superintendent of Buildings for the Ottawa Public School Board from February 1919 to 1924, then opened his own office there in 1924. His most notable work there was the distinctive Collegiate Gothic design for St. Patrick's College, Echo Drive, 1929-30. Beattie continued to practice until 1940 when he joined the Dept. of Naval Services as a staff architect. COMPETITIONS

KENORA, ONT., High School, 1927. Beattie was one of five architects who submitted a design in the competition for the new High School in Kenora in northwest Ontario (Winnipeg Tribune, 23 Nov. 1927, 10). His submission was passed over in favour of the winner Northwood & Chivers of Winnipeg.
