Beattie, Owen Keith

BEATTIE, Owen Keith (1880-1961) was active in Calgary from April 1911 until 1914. Born in England on 1 December 1880 he attended the School of Applied Art at Edinburgh and studied architecture at Heriot Watt College. He apprenticed with Bell & Cameron of Aberfeldy in 1900-03 and with Sir R. Rowand Anderson, one of Edinburgh's leading architects, from 1903 to 1909. Beattie opened his own office in Manchester in March 1909 but left England in early 1911 and emigrated to Canada where he joined the Calgary office of Hodgson, Bates & Butler, working there as a draftsman until he was appointed partner in 1913 (see list of works under Hodgson, Bates & Beattie). In 1914 he returned to England and was on active service during WW1. By 1923 he was working from an office in The Strand, London.
