Beattie, John

BEATTIE, John (fl. 1848-60) was active in London and St. Thomas, Ont., at first as a carpenter, builder and contractor, then from 1854 onward as an architect and civil engineer (Free Press [London], 13 Dec. 1854; Weekly Dispatch [St. Thomas], 2 Feb. 1855, 3, advert.). He was in partnership with George H. Smith in 1856 and again in 1859 (see list of works under Smith & Beattie). He is likely the same 'Mr. Beaty' [sic] who was paid for plans of railings at the London Court House in 1848 (London Times, 22 Dec. 1848). His professional card appeared in London newspapers until 30 March 1860.
