Barton, Vere

BARTON, Vere (1864-1923) was active in Winnipeg, Man., at first under his own name in 1905, then in partnership with H.G. Holman in 1906-07. Born in England in 1864, he arrived in Canada in 1902. In 1905 he submitted a design in the competition for St. Boniface Town Hall, but his scheme was set aside and Victor Horwood was declared the winner. No information has been found on his activity in Manitoba after 1907, but he is almost certainly the same "Vere Barton, Architect" listed in Tacoma, Washington in 1908 (Spokane City Directory, 1908, 176). He continued to practise as an architect in the town of Chehalis, Washington State until after 1920, and later died in Seattle, Wash. on 21 July 1923.
