Barter, Jonas C.

BARTER, Jonas C. (1875-1939), a native of Newfoundland, trained as a carpenter under his uncle Richard Barter and later worked with the building firm of Boland & Ryan. Not satisfied with a career as a joiner, he left for Boston and studied architecture at the College of Technical Art where he '..graduated with the highest honours given to pupils in the school'. He returned to St. John's in 1900 and quickly built up a practice serving residential and ecclesiastical clients. He had '..the double advantage of being both an architect and a practical carpenter, which accounts for his success in a considerable way'. Much of his work was commissioned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Newfoundland, and his designs for churches were invariably Gothic in style and often executed in wood frame construction. Barter founded the Concrete Block Co. in 1905, the first of its kind on the Island, and he aggressively promoted the use of 'Barter Stone' in local buildings, including those he designed himself (Trade Review & Commercial Annual [St. John's], 27 Jan. 1906, 10). After 1920 he became involved in local politics and only a few works can be attributed to him during this period. He served as a campaign manager in St. John's East and ran successfully in municipal elections. Barter died in St. John's on 11 May 1939 (obit. St. John's Daily News, 12 May 1939, 12; biog. and list of works Trade Review & Commercial Annual [St. John's], 31 Dec. 1910, 2)
