Barnes, Robert Percy

BARNES, Robert Percy (1857-1926), talented young architect from England who later moved to Montreal, then to Alberta, and then to British Columbia. He was recorded in the following firms:

R. Percy Barnes, Montreal, Que., 1892-1905

R. Percy Barnes, Edmonton, Alta., June 1906 - 1909

R. Percy Barnes, Edmonton, Alta. 1914-1921
R. Percy Barnes, Victoria, B.C., 1922-1925

He was born in London, England on 28 January 1857, the son of R.E. and L.S. (Fulton) Barnes. Educated at Canon Woodward's School, he articled in London with William C. Banks (in 1876-80), and then spent two years with R. Norman Shaw, a leading figure of the British architectural scene in the late Victorian era. In 1882 or 1883 Barnes emigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg where local directories record him as a staff member of the Audit Office of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1888 he moved to Montreal and practiced there under his own name from 1892 to 1905. He then moved to Edmonton, Alta. in 1905 and was invited by H.D. Johnson to form a partnership (see list of works under Johnson & Barnes). Their brief collaboration lasted less than a year (Edmonton Daily Bulletin, 2 June 1906, 2). Barnes then opened his own office where he designed many commercial, institutional and ecclesiastical works in Edmonton and surrounding towns. From late 1909 to 1914 he was in partnership with C. Lionel Gibbs, as Barnes & Gibbs, Architects. He was one of the founding members of the Alberta Assoc. of Architects and was elected as its President in 1909. By 1920 Barnes had retired from the profession and from 1922 he resided in Victoria, B.C. He died at Strathmore, Alta. on 16 August 1926 (obituary Edmonton Journal, 17 Aug. 1926, 9; obit. R.A.I.C. Journal, iii, Nov.-Dec. 1926, 252; biog. and port. Who's Who in Canada, 1923-24, 648; inf. Architectural Inst. of British Columbia)
