Barber, Lloyd Deloss

BARBER, Lloyd Deloss (1880-1947) may have been trained in England or the United States before moving to Brantford, Ont. to open an office there. He was born in the township of Townsend, Norfolk County, south of Brantford. No information has been found on his education or training, but in 1906 it was reported that Lloyd Barber of Brantford had left that city and moved to Detroit, Mich. "....where he had secured a position with an architect in that city" (Brantford Daily Expositor, 1 Feb. 1906, 12). It may thus be assumed that he obtained training as an architect there. By 1910 he had returned to Brantford, and in 1911 he designed two distinctive houses in a Tudor Revival style, one for T.H. Preston and another for William B. Preston, both of which were clad in an unusual tapestry pattern of brickwork which was fashionable in domestic English architecture during this period. In early 1911 Barber was recorded in partnership with W.H. Fairchild, a surveyor and civil engineer, in the firm of Fairchild & Barber (Brantford Daily Expositor, 14 Jan. 1911, 7), but within weeks their business was dissolved, and Barber continued to practice under his own name.

In early 1914 he formed a new partnership with William C. Tilley and together they prepared an exceptional design for the Trusts & Guarantee Co. office in Brantford in 1914. It featured an exuberant and meticulously detailed terra cotta facade crowned by three female caryatids supporting the bold projecting cornice; the overall composition must certainly rank as one of the finest terra cotta facades in Ontario. One of the employees in his office during this period was Frank W. Nicolls (Brantford Daily Expositor, 23 Oct. 1916, 7). Barber moved to the Sacramento County area of California after 1920, and died in San Francisco on 5 February 1947 at the age of 62 years (obituary Brantford Expositor, 8 Feb 1947, 6).
