Banigan, Joseph

BANIGAN, Joseph (1888-1961), and American-born architect who moved to Toronto after 1914, and he was partner in the following offices:

Banigan was born in Blackstone, Mass. on 20 June 1888 and he attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He later graduated from the Dept. of Architecture at the University of Toronto in 1917 and commenced practice that year in Toronto. He formed a partnership with Alvan S. Mathers and Christopher C. Thompson in early 1918, but when when Mathers left the firm in May 1919 the two remaining partners were joined by N.A. Armstrong, offering their services as 'Architects, Industrial Engineers and Construction Managers'. Their office closed in September 1921 when Banigan resigned from the Ontario Assoc. of Architects. He worked for a number of architectural firms in Toronto and was later in partnership with Stanley Kent as Banigan & Kent, Architects (biog. C.R., xxxii, 1 May 1918, 359; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects). Banigan died in Toronto on 28 May 1961 (obituary, Toronto Star, 1 June 1961, 36).
