BAMPTON, Charles John (1831-1889), a native of Ireland, was one of the earliest recorded architects to have practiced in northern Ontario. In 1870 he prepared a Gothic design for St. Luke's Anglican Church, Brock Street at Albert Street East, SAULT STE. MARIE, ONT., 1870, still standing in 2023 (Historical Record of Mother Parish of St. Luke's, Sault Ste. Marie, n.d., 116-17, illus.). in 1878 Bampton designed a substantial Public School at SAULT STE. MARIE, ONT. (Daily Advertiser [London], 30 July 1878, 3). Bampton died at Sault Ste. Marie on 21 December 1889 at the age of 61 years (Prov. of Ontario: Schedule of Deaths - Algoma District: Sault Ste. Marie, No. 001172)
