Cubbidge, Arthur Edwin

CUBBIDGE, Arthur Edwin (1881-1952) was born in Maidstone, Engl. on 23 May 1881 and was educated and trained in England. He emigrated to Canada about 1907 and worked in Winnipeg as an assistant to John J. Woodman who later invited him to become a full partner in the firm in 1917 (see list of works under Woodman & Cubbidge). When their partnership ended in 1924 Cubbidge opened an office in Winnipeg under his own name and designed several distinctive residences in a Tudor Revival style. By the mid-1930's he had adopted a more progressive and modern style for much of his work, the best example of which was the striking design for the T. Eaton Department Store in Port Arthur, Ont. He served a term as President of the Manitoba Assoc. of Architects in 1932 and continued to practice until 1950. Cubbidge died in Winnipeg on 28 October 1952 (obit. Winnipeg Tribune, 29 Oct. 1952, 29; R.A.I.C. Journal, xxx, March 1953, 87; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects)
