Adam, James

ADAM, James (1880-1965) was active in Ottawa where he was a sole practitioner in 1936-37 and 1947-62, and also held the post of Assistant Architect for the Dept. of Public Works from 1937 to 1946. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on 22 April 1880 he was educated there and trained with George Sinclair of Glasgow from 1901 to 1906. He moved to Montreal in 1906 and worked as draftsman for MacVicar & Heriot (in 1906-14), and worked under W. Herbert George where he designed military hospitals for the federal government in 1919-23. He worked in Philadelphia in 1924-27, then returned to Montreal to assist Ernest I. Barott in 1927-32. From 1947 he maintained his own practice in Ottawa and retired from the profession in 1962. Adam later died in Montreal, Que. on 22 June 1965, and was buried at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa (death notice Ottawa Citizen, 23 June 1965, 40; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects)
