Fahrland, Theophile

FAHRLAND, Theophile (1825-1870) combined the profession of architecture with that of an engraver and jewellery manufacturer in Montreal and was apparently successful at both for more than ten years. He was an ‘ancien eleve’ or ‘old boy’ of the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where it is presumed that he received his architectural education. His best known works in Montreal include the warehouse block for H. & H. Merrill (1867) and the Institut Canadien on Notre Dame Street (1865). He died in Chicago on 25 November 1870 and was buried at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery in Montreal near the Battle monument he had designed twelve years before (death notice in La Minerve [Montreal], 26 Nov. 1870, 3).
