Caron, Jules

CARON, Jules (1885-1942), another member of the Caron architectural family dynasty, was one of two sons of Louis Caron who followed the profession after the death of their father in 1917. Jules was born on 4 November 1885 in Arthabaska, Que. and was educated in Nicolet and Victoriaville. Like his brother Joseph H., they did not obtain a formal university education in architecture but chose instead to learn the profession by training in the office of his father. He opened an office in Trois Rivieres in 1915 and for the next twenty-five years designed many churches , schools, convents, hospitals and other works for the Roman Catholic church in central Quebec. Caron died in Trois Rivieres on 20 March 1942 (obit. Le Nouvelliste [Trois Rivieres], 21 March 1942, 3; R.A.I.C. Journal, xix, Nov. 1942, 227). His son Jean Louis Caron (1913-83) continued his father's practice. A detailed biography and list of works by Jules Caron prepared by A. Caron-Dricot was published in 1997 in Les Caron: Une Dynastie d'architectes depuis 1867, 1997, 215-28, 282-5. The Archives Nationales du Quebec at Trois Rivieres holds a major collection of architectural drawings by members of the Caron family.
