Caron, Joseph Henri

CARON, Joseph Henri (1877-1954), a member of the Caron architectural family dynasty, was one of two sons of Louis Caron who continued the architectural practice of their father. Joseph H. was born in Arthabaskaville, Que. in 1878 and graduated from the Seminary at Nicolet in 1896. He did not receive a formal education in architecture but instead gained all of his knowledge of the profession as a student in the office of his father. He opened his own office in Montreal in 1912 and continued to practice there until 1929 when he moved to Nicolet and remained active until 1940. Caron died in Montreal on 18 December 1954 (death notice La Presse [Montreal], 20 Dec. 1954, 47; biog. R. Hamilton, Prominent Men of Canada, 1931-32; 365; port. Montreal Old & New, c. 1914, 361). A detailed biography and partial list of works by J.H. Caron prepared by A. Caron-Dricot was published in 1997 in Les Caron: Une Dynastie d'architectes depuis 1867, 1997, 195-213, 281. The Archives Nationales du Quebec at Trois Rivieres holds a major collection of architectural drawings by members of the Caron family.
