Abramovich, David A.

ABRAMOVICH, David A. (1871-1950) was active in Winnipeg, Man. and specialized in the design of the prototypical but undistinguished three storey walk-up apartments erected during the building boom in that city before World War I. Born in Bucharest, Romania on 15 February 1871, he arrived in Canada in 1906 and settled in Winnipeg, Man. He appears to be the first Jewish architect to practise in Winnipeg, and he may be the first architect of the Jewish faith to live and work in the province of Manitoba. By 1920 he had moved to Los Angeles, California where he continued his career as an architect (Los Angeles City Directory, 1921, 378). He died there on 5 October 1950 (inf. Manitoba Association. of Architects).
